Thriving Child is a unique program that combines a structured
physical activity (swimming) with a professional nutrition education
program for both parents and children (ages 8 - 12). The program is balanced, focusing on both
diet and exercise. We employ the skills of a highly trained Registered
Dietitian combined with a highly motivational Swimming Coach. The
exercise is received though participation in structured (and very fun) swimming (not
simply lap swimming). Very often, the children enjoy the games so much that they don’t realize they are exercising. The
program is focused on developing lifelong healthy habits through habit modification, confidence enhancement, proper nutrition, strength building,
and aerobic exercise (with a large degree of fun mixed in as well).
The
Thriving Child program consists of a combination of nutrition classes
(for both children and parents) combined with a regular swimming
schedule for the children.
Each program will typically run 4 weeks. Some sessions run
on a Monday/ Wednesday schedule while others run on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule (see the Details Menu for the next available session). Sessions
will typically start either after school or after work. Each pool will
have unique session times and rotations. Careful attention to detail
has been given to each week's nutrition class and swimming session.
Each week, the programs build upon the prior week's knowledge base and
swimming session. The content and teaching style is geared to each
group's ability level (the kids won't be bored, and neither will the
parents).
The
parental nutrition classes will provide education on how to improve
overall health and create the lifestyle you desire for yourself and
your family. Many of the goals may be challenging for you, but we are here to help. The program covers many important topics including:
- Rewards of living a healthy lifestyle
- The secrets to maintaining a healthy weight
- Big 4 reasons children put on weight / the Big 4 fix
- Body Mass Index
- Being wary of quick fixes
- Portion sizes vs. serving sizes
- Effectively reading food labels
- Meal planning and shopping strategies
- Including physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle
- Benefits of fiber
- Fruits, vegetables and whole grains
- Benefits and methods of stress reduction
- The importance of Vitamins, Minerals, Carbohydrates, Fats, and Protiens
- Phytonutrients and antioxidants
- Working with a hectic schedule—quick meals, planning ahead, etc...
- Healthy eating and dining out
- Healthy recipe selection
- Leftover utilization
- Benefits of fat
- Eating healthy "on the run"
- Harmful fats
- Omega 3 fatty acids
- Staying motivated to keep up a healthy lifestyle
- Activities for different personalities
- Much more!!
The
swimming classes will be a combination of swimming games (80% fun in
the water) and introductory swimming stroke instruction (20% including instruction of freestyle and back stroke). Our primary goal is to have
the children exercise at regular intervals and have fun doing so. A
secondary, but important, goal is to increase each child's awareness of
their "inner athlete" and to provide an introduction to what we believe
is the greatest sport ever created, swimming! (yes... we are nuts for swimming).
Improving your child's swimming ability and endurance in the water
might actually save their life one day (or the life of a friend).
The
website (portal environment) is an important tool that we utilize
throughout the sessions. Through the portal, registered families will have access
to current studies, research, advice, recipes, shopping lists, and
other useful resources. The website also serves as a means for
communication and information sharing.
The
Thriving Child Corporation is pleased to provide all of these services
at a competitive price. We also offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We
look forward to your family's involvement and feel blessed that we are
able to contribute!
Sincerely,
The Thriving Child Team
